Baby Dedication

Baby dedications are somewhat different in most Baptist churches. At Wedgwood, it means that you and your wife carry your precious little bundle of joy onto the stage during a worship service. The pastor talks briefly to us about the vital role God should play in the raising of kids. Then he talks to the church congregation about how important their role is in providing a healthy church environment where our children are esteemed and our lives set an example. Then the pastor takes the child and holds him up in front of the congregation (reminiscent of the way Mufassa holds up Simba) and says a prayer for the child. Then he kisses the little bundle of joy and his microphone causes that kissing sound to be so loud that the walls seem to vibrate.

On this occasion, our little bundle was full of joy, but that's not the only thing he was full of. No sir, he was full of much, much (and I again I say Much) more. Before the pastor took Caleb from my arms I heard the gurgling sound of free flowing bodily functions. That's right! My boy had a juicy poop on stage in front of everyone. My left hand was underneath his behind, and as I handed him over to the pastor, I could feel a little wetness. Before this I was fighting back the tears because of how special this moment was, now I was fighting back laughs. The pastor handled it like a pro, but Tiffany was about ready to die of embarassment. She had been praying for weeks that this exact thing would not happen. I think God has a fantastic sense of humor.
