Sign Language
By Andy on 13 March 2005 the wee hoursCategory: The Boys
"I noticed your child does sign language," said a man at the mall play area who had just seen Caleb doing his version of the "all done" sign.
"Yeah, we've taught him some sign language," I said. "It helps since he tends to be a little-less-conversation-little-more-action-please kinda kid."
"We have four kids under four years old, and we have been teaching them to sign."
I said, "Caleb doesn't very many. We just taught him some of the basics."
He responded, "That's what we did too. Our kids only know about 40 signs."
"40!! Wow! Our son only knows three!" I said.
Later on, Tiffany told me I should've exaggerated about the number of signs he knows. We started counting them up, and this is our list of signs that Caleb has in his repertoire:
- I'm all done- Hands in a waving motion in front of his body
- I want more - Touching fingertips together.
- I want to eat - Hand to the mouth
- I would prefer to get my way - Lying on his back and kicking violently
- I would prefer to eat my favorite food - Throwing whatever item on the tray off onto the floor.
- I'm a tad frustrated - On all fours and striking the floor with his forehead.
- I've just put a yucky object in my mouth such as a wad of grass - Leaning over and spitting.
- I've got nasal drainage issues - Arm stretching across face and wiping
Now don't tell me Caleb knows sign language! And anyway, he's becoming less and less dependent on sign language now since he's started talking like crazy just in the past week. He is trying to say almost every word we say. It's mind blowing how all of a sudden these words start popping out of him.
