Two More Freedom Weeks to Go

One of the best things about getting a break from classes is that I have the time to read other books besides just the normal textbooks...not that all seminary textbooks are dull...but at least 53 percent are. So I've spent some time reading some other interesting things.

Over the Christmas vacation I read Wild At Heart by John Eldredge. It is by far one of the most energizing books I've ever read. Every man should read it because it captures what we men are really about. We need a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue. Eldredge says, "All men die; few men really live. Sure, you can create a safe life for yourself...and end your days babbling on about some forgotten misfortune. I'd rather go down swinging."

With parenthood looming and just getting off the heels of babysitting my nephew on New Year's Eve, I began reading a book called Dare to Discipline by James Dobson. After I figured out I still had a while before I would be needing to discipline a toddler, I quickly lost interest in the book. It's a good one though, and I know I'll be picking it back up later.

Now my reading has turned to the first book in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I'm exploring hobbit folklore and tales of dark wizards and powers that are mysterious and queer (Tolkien loved to use the word "queer"). I bought all three books for $15, and I hope to be done before the third movie hits the theater at the end of the year.

So, with two more freedom weeks to go, I've better get to reading.
