Is He Normal?
By Tiffany on 5 July 2007 late morningCategory: The Boys
Caleb and I made our weekly library trip today. This is always one of Caleb’s favorite days of the week. It is a fight to get him to return any book to the library. We check out around 20 books every week, and they let you keep them for three weeks. So at any given time we have up to 60 library books.
Here is a rundown of the topics of books we left the library with today:
Bulldozers
Milk processing plant
Ice Cream processing plant
What makes the seasons?
Composting
Electricity
Commercial fisherman
Aircraft carriers
Weapons of war
Construction Workers
Space Stations
If you were a pilot
Fire Fighting
Hot Air ballooning
Paleontologists
Human transportation
Where does our trash go?
Recycling
There was not a single fiction book in the group. This trend to get less and less fiction books has been going on for several months. Is this normal for a not quite four year old?
His passion this month is garbage. I can’t even explain how his face lights up when we read about landfills and recycling. He loved looking at the book full of diagrams on how plastic, glass, paper, and aluminum is recycled. He can explain the entire process better than I can. He asked if we could start composting.
I am learning so much about things I went 30 years without knowing or caring about. I must admit that I delegate the books on space, wars, and weapons to Andy. No matter how hard I try I just can’t get into those topics.

No, he’s not normal…and you should be jumping for joy! Kudos to you for encouraging his curiousity. I would go ahead and check out the gifted education options in your local school district, sounds like he may be a candidate!

I think you’re the one who’s not ‘normal’ – I say that in the nicest way :). Too many parents don’t take the time to cultivate a love of learning in their kids. You seem to be doing a fantastic job! You let him get things that interest HIM, not YOU.

It’s been great reading about you guys. Keep it up!
