...and welcome this brand new version of AndyKnight.com: version 3.0

WHAT’S DIFFERENT?

It looks different. Duh? That’s the most obvious difference. The colors are more reminiscent of the original AndyKnight.com that launched three years ago.

It’s easier to use. The previous site was built from scratch using a custom blog software that I built. It worked nicely, but this one (built with Textpattern ) is much easier and efficient. The admin interface is elegant and easy to manage. The process of uploading pictures is also much easier. Hopefully, I can convince Tiffany that she can join in the picture uploading fun.

Categories. We can tag our articles with categories to help you find past articles and related articles easier. There is a drop down menu at the bottom of every page (on the right column of the homepage) for you to browse the archives. Calebology will no longer be its own blog like it used to. It will be a category within our single blog we have.

Search the Site. You can search through all the articles we’ve written. Although the picture captions still aren’t included in the search, I think you’ll find this to be a useful feature.

Comments. You’ve always had the opportunity to use my homespun commenting on this site. However, now the comments allow you to use formatting within your comments using a coding standard called Textile. There are instructions on how to use it beside each comment box. I can also turn off comments on articles that don’t warrant a response.

Multiple authors. Tiffany can now write about other stuff besides Caleb if she wants to without have to take over my journal. I could also have a guest author if I wanted to.

WHAT DIDN’T MAKE IT

Yes, a couple things didn’t make it to the new site.

  1. Your old comments. Oh well, you win some you lose some, right. The time that it was going to take to export and import each comment individually was not worth it. I’ve got better things to do with my time. Anyway, I’ll be expecting you to make some new comments dipping with profoundness, or is it profundity.
  2. Ability to comment on pictures. I’ve not got this one figured out yet. Maybe it will come; maybe it won’t.
  3. The links section. I might add it back, but to be honest, I don’t know where I’d put it. I couldn’t fit a different link across the top of the page.
  4. The portfolio section (now called “Work”) is incomplete, but it didn’t bother me enough to not go ahead and make the site live.
  5. I need to create a custom “Not Found” page. So when you hit a bad link within the site (and there are going to be some) you’ll receive a friendly nudge back in the right direction.

There may be a few bugs left to stomp out, but I figured it was good enough, so enjoy it. Now that this is behind me, I can spend more time writing and posting pictures, which is why you really come.
