Prepared for the Worst but Hoping for the Best
By Tiffany on 17 January 2008 early morningCategory: The Boys
That’s how I felt the last month of pregnancy. Of course, Andy and I were excited, but it had been over four years since we had been around a newborn. We were nervous as we remembered the sleepless nights and crying that comes along with a new baby.
Fast forward five weeks, and Andy and I are in awe at how smoothly it has gone. We have had so much fun with Andrew the last few weeks. He is a very easy baby. He rarely ever fusses, and if he does he is easily comforted with a pacifier. He eats great. He nurses quickly, and doesn’t ever want to eat more often than every three hours during the day.
But the biggest surprise has been at night. He started out sleeping 4-5 hours at night. He’ll wake up and eat then go right back to sleep. Then we moved to 5-6 hours of straight sleep. A week later he was at 6-7 hours of sleep. I fed him at 8:30 last night, and then Andy and I crawled into bed. I woke up at 4 am this morning, looked at the clock, and then screamed, “Is he alive?” Andy jumped up and checked to make sure he was breathing. He was alive, but not too happy that I woke him up to eat when he wasn’t hungry. I can’t believe we actually feel so well rested already.
He is growing like a weed. He weighed 11 pounds 6 ounces at his one month check-up this week, and he was up to 23 and a half inches long. We had to pack up the newborn clothes when he was two weeks old. He can hold his head up, and he is grabbing for objects. We think the first smile might be coming any day.
Every night after dinner Andrew loves to snuggle on the couch with me or Andy. I can’t imagine how many times we have kissed his little wrinkled forehead. I had forgotten just how sweet a baby is. This time we realize how fast it goes by and don’t want to miss a minute.
Caleb loves being the big brother. He can’t get enough of Andrew. He loves to read him books and help with his bath. As soon as Andrew and I pick Caleb up from school Caleb says” Big Brother is back Andrew. I missed you so much today”. Then he kisses Andrew on the mouth and rubs their noses together. That part I could do without. Think of how many germs Caleb has on him after four hours at preschool.
I guess things could take a turn for the worse any minute, but for now we are counting our blessings for an easy baby and a well adjusted preschooler. If it keeps going this well I might want another little one. After all we did buy five Christmas stockings just in case.
