Questions about God

Last weekend, our Pastor, Bryant Wright, preached an entire 3-sermon series in one morning. It began last week when he asked the congregation to send in any questions they had about God, the Bible, and Christianity. He received nearly 200 questions. He took several of those and answered a different set in each morning service.
He told everyone that the sermons would be on the Right From The Heart website on Monday. Because of how fast the media team worked, they were actually available by Sunday afternoon. Having three sermons on one day was a little bit of a technical hurdle requiring a bit of extra programming, but it wasn’t that big of a deal.
It was a fantastic series. He answered questions such as…
- How does God answer prayer when he already knows the future
- Why don’t we have communion every Sunday?
- Can gays join the church?
- How was it determined which books should be included in the Bible?
- Can women serve in the church?
- Explain why it seems that God is spiteful and vengeful in the Old Testament and loving and kind in the New Testament.
- Why is there so much cruelty in the world?
- Do you have to come to church to be a Christian?
Since I knew that many people would be coming to the website to watch the other two services they did not attend, we put together a timeline which specified when Bryant answered each question so that you can easily skip ahead to a certain point if there is a specific question you want to hear. Then we sent out an email on Monday to all members of the church with that timeline and links to watch or listen to the series.
His answers were deeply rooted in Scripture, and he seasoned each response with his own personal style. He admitted when there was no easy answer to particular questions, and that some things are a mystery. I can’t imagine how much preparation and study it took to prepare for this one day series.
He doesn’t read blogs, especially mine, so I’m not trying to win points with the boss when I say that I’m thankful to be working with Bryant Wright. Even though Bryant doesn’t even use a computer at all, he does understand the value of the web. He’s a great leader, but he’s also very down to earth. And that comes across as he answers these questions.
