Reading the Paper at Breakfast
By Andy on 22 February 2006 early morningCategory: The Boys
Caleb and I eat breakfast together every morning. While eating we enjoy talking about what happened yesterday, what he’s going to do today, singing his favorite songs, and searching for almonds in our Honey Bunches of Oats cereal.
But that’s not what he enjoys most.
What he enjoys most is looking at the paper—more specifically, the sale pages, and by now he could tell you the story behind almost every item their hawking. We’re not just talking about the toy sale pages either. He likes the good stuff. This morning we looked through the Cabela’s pages, the Bass Pro Shop pages, the Sears pages, the Academy pages, and the comics. Actually, we have looked at those same circulars for the last three mornings! We only get a paper delivered on Sunday, so those sale pages have to last the entire week. Some of the pages are held together by scotch tape and stuck together with syrup. That’s the abuse they endure at the hands of a two-year old.
In the outdoor sports circulars, he loves to look at the fishing lures pages. He loves for me to tell him the story about how a fishing lure works, how it looks like a fish, how the fish bite it, and how the hook gets caught in his mouth. I’ll say, “So what do we do when we catch it?” He’ll shout, “Clean him, cook him, and eat him!” After we talk about that story 4 or 5 times, then we move on to the next page where we talk about the next item and the story behind what he does.
Wow, it’s amazing how much he loves stories.
