Science Buff

Caleb is a very unique child. We are optimistic that he’ll be well rounded, but he tends to be drawn to math and science at an early age. This is foreign to me because that was never my strong area. Here is an example of a typical day in the life of Caleb:

We got in the car to head to school this morning when he announced what the topic of conversation would be during the 15 minute drive. This is normal for him. He usually has something on his mind he has been pondering that he wants to discuss. He said, “Today let’s play…Is it a solid, liquid, or a gas?”. He told me the rules. I would name objects, and he would label them a solid, liquid, or a gas. So I played along. His science teacher at school talked about the different states of matter a few weeks back. I named about 25 different objects and he got them all correct.

For the bonus round he said, “What will happen if you have water in a triangle container and you pour it in a circle container? Will it stay in the triangle shape or turn into the circle shape?” I wasn’t sure if he knew the answer so I said, “I don’t know. What do you think?”. He then said, “Mom, a liquid always takes the shape of its container”.

A few days ago after we buckled in the car he said, “Let’s name machines that work in pairs. I’ll start…garage door and garage door opener. Your turn mommy”. I just sat there a few minutes dumbfounded before I could come up with something. He is so random.

Andy and I have discussed that we are OK if he turns out to be a geek in school. He wears glasses, has asthma, and loves to talk about science. Three strikes against him already. All he needs now is a pocket protector in his stocking for Christmas. We wouldn’t change his personality for anything. He is so much fun!

  1. He is so going to love my Christmas present :-)
