Sunday

Sunday is always a good day. It usually starts with getting to sleep a bit later than normal. Sometimes we go to church and worship on Sunday… if we don’t go on Saturday night. It’s one of my two days of getting to be a dad all day long, and there’s nothing like it.

Me and Caleb under an umbrella in the backyardLast Sunday I took Caleb to a water park. Today we played in the rain a little. We played “volcano” in Caleb’s room. It’s a game we made up where we pretend to be volcanologists working around an erupting volcano. We also went to Red Lobster where Caleb wanted me to tell him and Tiffany every shrimp story I knew from my shrimping days with Pappy. As a side note, Caleb loves shrimp. He ate half a dozen. I don’t know whether to be happy about that or not. I’m not sure I want to share my shrimp with him. Sunday is not a glamorous day. It may not sound like your kind of day. But to me, Sunday is the best day of the week.

But Sunday is also a sad day. It’s sad because it’s so good. I never want it to end. I know that I’ll have a whole week before another Sunday rolls around. Throughout the entire day, a thought is hovering somewhere in the background that tomorrow is Monday. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. I get paid for work that would otherwise be my hobby. And I get to do it for the greatest cause in the world: the local church. Still, it doesn’t compare with the job of fatherhood.

During the week, I always feel like I have to watch the clock. Is it time for me to stop playing and leave for work? Is it time for Caleb to get his teeth brushed? Is it bed time? But for most of Sunday, there is no clock. That’s why it’s a good day, and a sad day.

Here’s to Sunday.

  1. ya, sundays are good days, man … but also sad like you mentioned. Sunday evening, as the kids start realizing the weekend is about over, they always ask, “Do you have to go to work tomorrow, Daddy?” they know the answer, but I think they ask it just in case I say “no”.

btw – have ya’ll sold your house yet? Here we sit in Virginia for the last 4 months while our house is still in TX, unsold.

  2. Nope, Chuck. We still haven’t sold our house either. I guess the commute is better than paying for two places to live though. A commute from TX to VA would be a little difficult though.

  3. That’s a neat picture of you and Caleb playing in the rain. Is your hair cut shorter than usual? We finally have started getting plenty of rain. I planted my turnip green patch and garlic yesterday and we got almost 3 inches of rain last night. Looking forward to our visit. Give Tiffany a hug for me….....Dad

  4. Dad: I get a haircut about every 6 weeks. So it gets long and then short, long and then short.
