Kopf Consulting Group
3 January 2008Phil Kopf, who owns his own structural engineering consulting firm in the metro Atlanta area named Kopf Consulting Group, was familiar with my work at Right From The Heart and contacted me about redesigning his company’s web site. Phil has worked all over the country and has won awards for his consulting in tilt-up concrete construction projects.
His tagline is “Economy By Design,” and this is what it means in his own words:
“Engineering is more than an exact applied science of rules to follow. Rather, it is a complicated integration of skill and resourcefulness. And, proficient engineering is a balanced combination of formula, knowledge and creativity.”
You can remove the words “Engineering” from that quote and insert the words “Web site building,” and that’s exactly how I feel about what I do for a living, so I definitely understand where he’s coming from.
The Problem
Kopf Consuting Group was unhappy with the way his current site highlighted his projects and his awards. They also needed a site that projected the same professionalism and appeal that their clients are used to seeing in their engineering concepts. And of course, he needed a site that simple for him to update and upload project photographs.
The Solution
The front page of the site is very photo-centric, which features a large photo area to highlight his best work. The front image area uses a custom javascript technique for rotating graphics. The site also features a wider 950-pixel layout.
For the Content Management System (CMS), I chose Expression Engine. I found it to be highly flexible and easy to implement. I’ll certainly use it again.
My specific work was:
- Overall site flow, organization, design, and concept
- HTML/CSS coding
- Graphics created in Photoshop
- Implementation of data into the CMS

Very impressive design, Andy. The site is crisp and clean, but not too business-y looking. I especially like the map at the bottom of the page. I can’t help but feel that the image rotation could benefit from a cross-fade, rather than abrupt change. Other than that, it’s a nice feather in the cap for the ol’ portfolio.

I love EE as well, but I’m having serious issues setting up the Multiple Site Manager using my Plesk server. But that’s for another day. I’ll still use EE again too.
Anyway, that is a very beautiful site. Great job!
